From the shop

From lockouts to master keys.

Every lockout and every key job begins the same way: we make sure the person asking is entitled to ask. That might be a driver's licence with the address on it, a lease or a property manager on the phone. It takes a moment, it protects you as much as anyone, and it is the mark of a locksmith you would want working on your own door.

Locksmith services

Every kind of lock, one call

We open, rekey, repair, replace and install. Under those five verbs sit dozens of specific jobs, from a stuck mailbox lock to a keypad on a warehouse door. The list below covers the ones people ask about most; if yours is missing, ask anyway.

Change or Rekey Locks

When you buy a house you inherit its keys, and there is no way to know how many were cut. Rekeying every exterior door in one visit resets that history.

  1. Two detached brass lock cylinders and four house keys on a wooden counter. — Lock Rekeying, Toronto
Lock RekeyingEvery copy of your house key seems to work a little differently. One needs a jiggle, another sticks halfway, and the original wore down years ago.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Toronto
Deadbolt InstallationSomeone tried the door last winter. The frame took it, but the strike plate is bent, one screw hole is stripped, and the bolt sits in the pocket at a slight angle.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Toronto
Lock Replacement & UpgradeEvery morning the front door key needs the same little dance: push in, lift, wiggle, turn. It has been getting worse for a year, and this week it took three tries in the cold before the deadbolt finally gave.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Toronto
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceAfter a wet summer the entry door sits lower in its frame. The lock works perfectly when the door is open, but with it shut you have to lift the handle and shoulder the door to get the deadbolt to throw.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Toronto
Smart Lock InstallationThere are four copies of the front-door key floating around: one with the cleaner, one with a neighbour, one on a hook at your parents' place, and one you honestly cannot account for. You would rather hand out codes you…
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Toronto
Gate & Building Entry LocksThe gate to the side yard used to close with a satisfying click. After a winter of frost heaving the fence post, the latch now sits a full inch below where the strike is waiting for it, and the gate swings free no…
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Toronto
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe mail slot on the shop's exterior wall has a small compartment lock that a former employee still has a key to, months after they left. Nobody on staff can say with any confidence who else might hold a copy.

High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

Which fix fits?

An employee left on bad terms and still has a key.The usual fix

UsuallyRekey the doors that key opens.

WhyNew pins make the old key just metal, and the remaining staff get fresh ones.

Twelve people have keys and nobody knows how many copies exist. The usual fix

UsuallyA restricted key system.

WhyBlanks that are only cut with your authorization stop the quiet copying, and a register tracks every key out.

You want to know who came in through the back door and when. The usual fix

UsuallyA keypad or fob reader with an audit log.

WhyEach person gets their own code or fob, so the log shows entries by name.

UsuallyDeadbolt Installation

WhyDeadbolt installation puts a solid bolt lock on a door that either has none or has one that is past its useful life.

The brass handleset has gone blotchy and green where the winter salt reaches it, and the coating on the deadbolt is lifting in flakes. The usual fix

WhyWhen people say upgrade they usually mean a heavier lock, and there is a real scale behind that word.

How a visit goes

A high security cylinder is rated by independent laboratory testing that times how long it holds out against picking, impressioning, drilling, prying and wrenching. The lock body and deadbolt carry a separate hardware grade for strength, cycle life and finish.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Mapping who needs what

We sit down with whoever manages the building and list the doors, the people and the hours. A stockroom key and a front door key are rarely the same conversation.

  2. 2 of 3

    Changing the locks in order

We rekey door by door in an order that keeps the business open, starting with the entrance a departed key holder used most, and label everything as we go.

  3. 3 of 3

    Handing over a key record

You get the new keys, a simple written list of which key opens what, and a suggestion for where to store the record so the next change is easier.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 58%Older homes

About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older homes tend to have had many hands on their doors: owners, tenants, tradespeople, family. A locksmith visiting such a house pays attention to who holds keys now, and rekeying or a keyed-alike set often matters more than any new hardware.

  • 23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

Shared entrances mean fobs, intercoms and buzzers alongside conventional locks. A locksmith can service the mechanical side of those doors and advise on how the fob system and the cylinder work together when management asks.

What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?

The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks.

Can all my doors be on one key?

Yes, and most homes ask for exactly that. Every exterior cylinder is pinned to the same combination so one controlled key opens the front, back, side and garage entry. A gate or shed padlock on the same keyway can join it. For businesses, the same keyway can carry a small master system where staff keys open only their areas and a manager key opens everything. The keying plan is agreed before any pinning is done.

What actually makes a lock high security?

Three things working together. The cylinder has a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, plus hardened steel in the path of a drill, so picking, bumping and drilling take far longer than on an ordinary lock. The deadbolt and strike are heavier and fastened into the framing. And the key is cut on a patented or restricted blank that only an authorised person can have copied. Remove any one and the door is weaker than the label suggests.

Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?

Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most.
