Should I rekey my locks after being locked out?
It depends entirely on where the key is. If it was inside the house the whole time, your locks are exactly as secure as they were yesterday and nothing needs changing. If the key was lost or stolen, rekeying is the sensible follow-up, because it retires that key for good while keeping your existing hardware. Lock manufacturers give a lost or stolen key as one of the main reasons to rekey, and doing it during the same visit saves a second call. Home Lockout Service
How do you confirm I am allowed to have the business opened?
Through identification and a link to the premises. An owner shows photo identification with the lease, business registration or a document addressed to the company at that address. A manager or employee is confirmed by a call to the owner, head office or property manager on a number the locksmith can verify. If everything is inside, the check is finished after entry, before the locksmith leaves. Business Lockout Service
My car key snapped in the door. Is that a locksmith job?
Yes. Vehicle door locks and ignitions use wafer cylinders that respond to the same extractor tools. Once the blade is out, the plastic head you are holding, which carries the transponder chip and any remote buttons, can usually take a freshly cut blade so the car keeps recognizing it. The ignition is checked as well, since a broken key sometimes disturbs the wafers. Broken Key Extraction
How long does a break-in repair take?
It depends on how much gave way. A new lockset and a reinforced strike on a sound frame is a modest job. Bonding a split jamb, sleeving a crushed door edge, reinforcing the hinges and rekeying several cylinders takes longer, and a shattered frame means a securing visit now and a second visit after the carpenter. The locksmith gives a sense of the time once the damage has been seen, and the opening is secured before leaving even when a part has to be ordered. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
My keys were lost with something showing my address. Is rekeying enough?
Rekeying is exactly the right response, because it makes the lost key useless at every door that was pinned. The locksmith will walk the property with you to be sure nothing is missed, including the garage side door, a shed and any padlock the same key opened, and will suggest changing any garage keypad code that was written on the same ring. After that, whoever finds the keys is holding brass that opens nothing on your property. Lock Rekeying
Can I supply my own deadbolt?
Yes. Bring the box, the template and the instructions, and tell the locksmith the model beforehand so the bore and backset can be checked against your door. If the kit turns out to need a larger hole or a different faceplate than the door has, the locksmith adapts the door or suggests a matching model. Hardware bought online sometimes arrives set for a different door thickness, which is a small adjustment on site. Deadbolt Installation
Is there anything different about steel or fibreglass doors?
The lock hardware is the same; the door construction changes the method. Steel and fibreglass doors have a wooden or composite block inside the lock stile, and existing bores are used wherever possible. Where a new deadbolt must be added, the locksmith drills with a jig and bits suited to the skin so the hole is clean and square, and fits an edge plate designed for that door. Insulated doors also move less with humidity, so alignment tends to hold well. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
How long does servicing a mortise lock take?
A single entry lock that needs cleaning, springs and a strike adjustment is generally done in one visit of an hour or two. Filing a bit key adds bench time, and a set of interior latches is longer simply because there are more of them. A case that needs a part fabricated, or a replacement case that has to be ordered to size, may mean a second visit; the locksmith says so at the assessment. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

What is a relocker, and does it change how the safe is opened?
A relocker is a small device inside some safes built to jam the bolt work until a trained technician services it, if the case is drilled in the wrong spot, dropped, or exposed to fire, as a defence against forced entry. If one has tripped, the fix is mechanical: freeing or replacing the relocking mechanism, rather than another attempt at the combination. Recognizing a tripped relocker early changes the plan from the first visit rather than after several failed attempts. Safe Opening & Combination Change
What information should I have ready before requesting a quote?
Knowing roughly what the safe will store, whether it is a new purchase or an existing unit, and what floor or wall it will sit against covers most of what shapes the visit. If the safe is already on site, its approximate weight and dimensions help too, along with whether it currently has a working lock and combination. An insurer's stated rating requirement, if there is one, is worth mentioning as well. Safe Installation & Servicing
Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?
Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
Will every old key stop working once you are done?
Every old key that operated a cylinder included in the plan will stop working, and the locksmith proves it by trying old keys at each door before leaving. Old keys keep working only at openings you chose to leave alone, which are written on the chart so there is no confusion. If a master key existed, it is tested too, since a forgotten master is the most common way an old key stays alive. Commercial Rekeying
What is tested before the keys are handed over?
Every cylinder is tested on the bench against its assigned keys, then again once installed: the change key on its own door, the relevant sub-master across its whole group, and the top-level master across every door in the system. Any lock that responds to a key it should not is corrected before handover rather than left for the owner to discover later. Master Key System Design
How long does an installation usually take?
A single standalone door is usually finished within a day, including testing and training. A building with several networked openings, cabling to run and a controller to program takes longer, and is often planned across more than one visit so cabling, hardware, and software configuration each get proper attention rather than being rushed through in one pass. Access Control Installation
What is the difference between a rim, mortise and vertical-rod device?
A rim device sits on the surface of the door and suits most single openings, including many tall and fire-rated doors on their own. A mortise device fits into a pocket cut in the door's edge and is chosen where a heavier case or a particular trim style is wanted. A vertical-rod device runs rods to the top, or top and bottom, of the frame, which suits an opening that specifically needs latching at more than one point rather than height by itself. Car Keys
Is an older car easier or harder to open than a new one?
Different rather than easier. An older car usually has a cylinder in every door and simple linkages, so picking or decoding the lock is routine. A newer car may hide its cylinder, has doors full of electronics that call for wedge-and-reach rather than anything inside the door, and adds an immobiliser to any lost-key work. Either way the locksmith chooses the method by the model, not by guesswork. Car Lockout Service
Can you make a key if every key to the car is gone?
Often, yes, for vehicles with a supported conventional key system: the car is opened, a blade is produced by decoding the door lock or retrieving the factory key code, and the immobilizer is reset so the missing keys are erased before new ones are stored. A key-card or phone-key vehicle, or one needing a dealer procedure, follows its own route instead, which is why the VIN is asked for on the first call. Car Key Replacement
How is the electronic chip handled during duplication?
Where the transponder supports it, the chip in the working key is read and its data cloned onto a fresh chip, sometimes with vehicle-specific data pulled from the car to help. Where cloning is not supported for that particular vehicle and chip, the locksmith instead connects through the diagnostic port and has the car's own security module enrol a freshly coded chip as a new, independently authorized key. Spare Car Key Duplication
Do I need to prove I own the vehicle before a fob is programmed?
Yes, and it is asked for the same reason a locksmith checks identity before opening a house: a fob is a way to drive off in someone's vehicle. Registration, a bill of sale, an insurance document, or simply being present with the vehicle and an existing key generally settles it. This step protects the actual owner as much as anyone, including a future owner who buys the car from you. Key Fob Programming
